Minnesota Reformer: Minnesota water bottle plant receiving millions in subsidies

A California-based water bottling company is receiving millions in taxpayer subsidies to sell plastic water in Minnesota, despite concerns over the massive size extraction of the valuable resource.

The company, Niagara Bottling, is receiving money from both the state and the city of Elko New Market, where the plant will be located. Niagara will extract 13 million gallons of water per month, more than the entire city uses in water, according to the Minnesota Reformer.

“Some residents aren’t sure why a company that sells water should be able to purchase it from the city at a discounted rate — especially because the increased water extraction could disturb the wells of nearby residents, forcing the city to pay for treatment.”

As the story notes, Niagara has gotten millions in subsidies in other states, per the Good Jobs First’s Subsidy Tracker.
