The powerful U.S. Chamber of Commerce is waging a nasty campaign to remove Rohit Chopra, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. They’re calling him “out-of-control,” “ideologically driven,” “radical,” “extreme” and “heavy-handed,” writes LA Times columnist Michael Hiltzik.
His crime? Doing his job, which is to protect consumers against abuse by the financial services sector. Hiltzik cites Good Jobs First’s Violation Tracker in noting just one bank alone, JPMorgan Chase, has racked up over $36 billion in penalties by state, federal and industry regulators.
